ForMINg AND rEADINg 4-DIgIt NUMbErS

We use groups, like ones, tens, hundreds and thousands to form a 4-digit number. For

reading a 4-digit number, we start from the digit in the thousands (Th) place, then the
digit in the hundreds (H) place and the remaining tens (T) and ones (O) places together.

Let us understand this with some examples.

                                                                             Th H T O

              1000 + 200 + 40 + 2 = 1 2 4 2

1242 is read as one thousand two hundred forty-two.

                                                                            Th H T O

                    2000 + 500 + 8 = 2 5 0 8

2508 is read as two thousand five hundred eight.

                                                                                        Th H T O

                         3000 + 400 + 10 + 6 = 3 4 1 6

3416 is read as three thousand four hundred sixteen.

Example. How will you read the following 4-digit numbers?
                         a. 3426 b. 2703

            Solution. a. Th H T O b. Th H T O

                               3 4 2 6 2 7 0 3

                                               twenty-six three

                                              four hundred seven hundred

                                              three thousand two thousand
3426 is read as three thousand 2703 is read as two thousand
four hundred twenty-six. seven hundred three.
